Herb & plant knowledge Edelweiss

Edelweiss, the queen of the Alps, has been the trademark of numerous JUST products for decades. The alpine edelweiss (Leontopodium Alpinum) belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae). Due to its breathtaking beauty, this unique plant has been collected in rough quantities over the last 200 years and has almost been exterminated. The alpine plant is strictly protected and is now grown in cultures since some years.

Edelweiss (Leontopodium Alpinum)

Origin:

The edelweiss is originally from Asia. Since the last ice age, it has also grown up in the European mountains. As a typical high-altitude the edelweiss grows mainly on meadows and limestone rocks, at an altitude of between 1,500 and 3,400 metres. Here the plant  is exposed to light, wind, dryness and cold, prevailing in a soil that is low in nutrients. It copes with strong UV radiation, low atmospheric pressure and extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Due to the extreme climatic conditions and the strong UV radiation, the plant has specific active substances that it needs to survive.

The Edelweiss JUST uses is cultivated under organic and fair trade conditions in the canton of Valais. The cultivation takes place in cooperation with Swiss farmers who have over 20 years of experience in this field. From sowing to the final extract, the best quality and traceability is guaranteed.

Effects:

Edelweiss has developed a high concentration of antioxidants over thousands of years. These substances preserve the youth of the skin, protect it from premature ageing caused by UV rays and maintain the moisture balance. Edelweiss is also valued for its antibacterial, antiseptic and vasoconstrictor properties.
