International Women’s Day and its significance

People all over the world have celebrated International Women’s Day, which focuses on women’s rights and gender equality, since 1911. The day celebrates the success of the women’s rights movement and draws attention to discrimination and unequal treatment, issues which still face wom-en today. International Women’s Day is an appeal for gender equality worldwide. With over 120,000 representatives in 34 countries, JUST brings together voices from around the globe for International Women's Day.

The special day is celebrated in different ways, not only from country to country but also from region to region, always with different values and, depending on the region, a differentiated focus.

Sending flowers for International Women’s Day is a widely adopted gesture in many countries.

While opinions about the usefulness of flowers on this day increasingly diverge, everyone agrees on one point: although women can now do many things and achieve various goals – equality of the genders is a reality experienced in a tiny minority of countries on this planet. According to World Bank rankings in 2019, full gender equality of men and women before the law prevails only in Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg and Sweden. Much remains to be done and therefore International Women’s Day has lost none of its significance.

The United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is “Break the Bias”.

The campaign concentrates on the fight against prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination. You can find more about International Women’s Day on social media under hashtag #BreakTheBias.
