The power of herbs

More joy in exercise thanks to the power of herbs

Exercise is important for our physical and mental health. It keeps us fit and improves our well-being. Sporting activities give our cardiovascular system a boost, strengthen the immune system and can even make us happy. Stress hormones are neutralised or broken down and the happines hormones serotonin and dopamine are produced. The more regularly we exercise, the more stress resistant our bodies become.

In the past it was very different how we spend our free-time.  Most of the day people spent  on doing physical work in the open air. Our ancestors moved only on foot and covered several kilometres per day just in search of food. Times have changed greatly, but our bodies have not. This means our bodies are designed for moving and not just sitting around.

Some of us spend up to 12 hours a day sitting in or on chairs. We sit in the car, on the train, at work, for our meals and when relaxing in front of the TV. The results include muscular tension, neck and back pain or even lumbago. But it is not just our lifestyle that prevents us from taking regular exercise. Some people suffer from rheumatic diseases. These disorders have various effects and there are hundreds of different types. According to www.rheumaliag.ch, rheumatism is the most common illness in Switzerland. Two million people out of the country’s total population of 8.5 million suffer from it. The most well-known forms are arthritis (joint inflammation) and arthrosis (joint wear).

Sports injuries and muscle aches can limit our mobility and influence our willingness to be active/to stay fit/ to do sports.

Medicinal plants
Traditional herbal medicine can turn to a selection of medicinal plants to remedy a restricted musculoskeletal system. Tried and tested for thousands of years, these plants are recognised for their beneficial effects.

Arnica (Arnica Montana)

Arnica is a medicinal and native plant in Switzerland. In 2001 the plant was even  nominated as the “Medicinal Plant of the Year”. Arnica flowers have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore,  it helps with all kinds of inflammation and is suitable for the external treatment of contusions.

Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens)

The roots of the devil’s claw, a medicinal plant from Africa, are very valuable and can be used for rheumatic and chronic joint complaints. Their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties improve mobility.

Frankincense (BOSWELLIA SERRATA)

In many cultures, frankincense is considered an important medicine and is most well-known in Ayurvedic treatments. Boswellia has an anti-inflammatory effect and disinfecting properties and is therefore widely used for joint inflammation.
