The Aztecs and Mayas considered cocoa to be sacred and regarded it as a gift from the gods. This is also reflected in the Latin name of the cacao tree – theobroma cacao. Theobroma translates as food of the gods.
The cocoa tree originated in the tropical regions of South America. Today it is cultivated in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The JUST cocoa trees are cultivated in Uganda on a plantation of around 8000 hectares. Our supplier is committed to fair trade and is a certified “Fair for Life” operator. Depending on the context, the term cocoa refers to various products; the cocoa tree, the cocoa fruits that grow on it, the cocoa beans, cocoa mass, cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Cocoa and chocolate contain hundreds of aromatic substances, around 25 of which are responsible for the characteristic scent. Dark chocolate is said to have various beneficial effects. For example, a high cocoa content in chocolate is said to have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, while antioxidants contained in the cocoa beans have a cell-protecting function. In addition, chocolate consumption produces feelings of happiness and joy, due to mood-lifting substances such as theobromine and tryptophan.
